Please join us in congratulating DHES, ARC, and BHHI faculty member Ryan Assaf for being named one of the 2026 class of John Watson Scholars.
Ryan’s work on substance use in populations experiencing homelessness and his deep, deep commitment to the goals of health equity and to the ideals of having biomedical researchers reflect the tapestry of people in our state and nation. Ryan is an incredible researcher, colleague, and mentor—and most deserving of this prestigious award.
The UCSF School of Medicine Watson Scholar Fund was established in 2015 to support the recruitment and retention of faculty who share the university’s commitment to diversity and our belief that we have the responsibility to care for culturally diverse and medically underserved populations. The awards provide faculty with three-year, $75,000 per year support to develop their academic interests, as well as pursue activities that contribute to the community.
The awards are named after Professor John A. Watson, whose legacy as a distinguished scientist, dedicated mentor, and advocate for inclusive excellence continues to inspire future generations.
